360 Air Intake
The biggest challenge with Flow-sized sensing technology is perfectly reproducing outside air conditions inside the device. We’ve built the solution right into the design: the holes carved all around Flow’s polished steel sleeve are Plume Labs’ exclusive 360 Air Intake. Combined with the smallest fan technology available, they guarantee optimal air circulation.
Miniaturized Pollutant Detection
Flow’s sensing technology makes the most of the science available for such a high degree of miniaturization and portability: light-scattering and metal-oxide reactions.
Light scattering: by aiming a laser at the stream of air brought in by Flow’s fan, the light scattered by passing particulate matter is translated into measurable electrical current by a built-in photovoltaic cell.
Metal-oxide reactions: a miniature membrane is heated up to 350°C, capturing all NO2 molecules or Volatile Organic Compounds it makes contact with. The resulting variations in electrical current are what Flow turns into a measurement.
Neural Networks and Filtering
Thanks to four years of research and development, the accuracy and reliability of Flow’s onboard sensing technology has been pushed above and beyond what light scattering and metal-oxide reactions could do.
Flow’s neural networks and filtering algorithms are programs trained to detect patterns in large datasets and extract the signal from the noise. Because their learning patterns mimic the human brain, the more data they analyse, the more accurate they become. Combined with Flow’s self-calibration algorithms, the more you use your device, the better it gets!

Flow can be charged either via its USB socket or its metal contact connectors by placing it on the included dock. Please note that while both methods work over your computer’s USB, in order to charge Flow on a regular power outlet you will need to purchase a power adapter separately.
